Campidoglio 2 - Furniture

Clients: Municipality of Rome, Arredamenti Albanese, Devoto Arredamenti. Co-Designer: IED Design Team. Recognition: nominee for the Compasso d?Oro. Campidoglio 2 is the program commissioned by the Municipality of Rome for relocation and reorganization of the municipal offices merged into one large new complex. As a first prototype, the public administration commissioned the development of a pilot project, which included the design of spaces and furnishings for one of the department to be first relocated. The work consists of developing coordinated interior and furnishings suitable to provide a better environment for the activities carried out within the offices, following the guidelines given by the communication strategies carried on by the public administration. More

Among the distinctive elements of the project is the development of an innovative wiring system that consists of cables, ducts and outlets built-in the furniture and arranged at the same height of the worktops.

The system provides much more flexibility in the allocation of workstations, and it facilitates the access to cables, also reducing maintenance costs.

DESCRIPTION

 

The ceiling light and wall partition that make up UnSolid by Mauro Del Santo, an industrial designer based in Rome, Italy, are visually striking. Both of them follow a slatted sort of design in which they are not completely, well, solid, hence the collection’s name. Yet they aren’t rigid either. Instead, the pieces adhere to a fluid form that gives them a beautiful sculptural appeal.

 

UnSolid by Mauro Del Santo was presented for the first time at the last Rome Maker Faire and it was recognized with the nomination of "Maker of Merit 2013." The designs embraced mathematical computations and innovative manufacturing technologies. According to the designer, “Among major intent of the project, fast and economical production techniques have been developed to build complex surfaces of large size.[...] Important result was achieved by the experimentations on computational processing for the development of outstanding morphologies.”

 

New concepts of furniture and interiors will be developed and presented for the next Rome Maker Faire together with new innovative materials.

Designed to emphasize heterogeneity of books and the fact that furniture are part of their content. The adjustable narrow shelves slide along the vertical structure. DESCRIPTION

 

Bookshelf composed of adjustable narrow shelves able to slide along the vertical structure. The patented joint systems allows regulating and locking the shelves position. The friction produced on the rails by weight able to stop them sliding when loosen. All elements are made ??of solid wood and the joints are milled.


The narrow shelves have been preferred to emphasize the heterogeneity of books and to experiment the idea of furniture able to adapt to its content. The chaotic configuration is actually practical and functional; it demonstrates the idea the designer has that tightness and rationality do not have to be linear, as the commonplace idea of minimalism dictates. The books and their singularities are the ingredients that give character to the composition.  Books become part of the furniture, as first actors of the scene, leaving to the bookshelves the mere role of hardware.

 

Thanks to the flexibility of the structure, the system can be easily adapted to different scenarios and functions. It is modular and customizable.

 

It is been revisited and produced for the interior of Wonderfool, a beauty care shop, in which it is been designed with two functions: product display and wall cladding.

Adhering to the general themes of promotion of indigenous knowledge, appropriate low-cost technology and environmental conservation, the action aimed at piloting a training programme for the creation and/ or expansion of work opportunities in the manufacturing arm of the micro and small-scale enterprise (MSE) sector.

The action offered on-the-job training in Product Design and Development, integrated by business counselling and marketing support services.

The training was mainly directed at the production of innovative functional and utilitarian handicrafts and tools as well as the improvement of ceremonial items in response to market needs.

The project location was in Nairobi and Turkana District - Kenya, and targeted both host and refugee communities.

Invited by +iso, a premier OLED consulting company, the designers Ely Rozenberg and Mauro Del Santo have been  committed to interpret the OLED lighting technology through concepts focused to emphasize the quality and the novelty found in the newest devices family developed by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.
A dramatic cost-drop, substantial reliability, compelling performances and large scale production are the prominent qualities of MCC new wet-coating OLED family which have made the application design particularly intriguing and challenging.
Besides the technical challenges, the new technology has brought also new stimulating design opportunities focusing the project on creating new aesthetics and   exalting the extraordinary OLED panel morphology.

The OLED almost immaterial shape – thickness of less than 1 mm and weight of 17 grams -  inspired the creation of weightless filaments that are made of carbon fibres tubes. These are assembled together to create a modular and elementary shapes. A magnetic fixing system has been developed to ensure mechanical and electrical connections, leaving  the thin and iridescent edges of the OLED visible, allowing also easy components replacement. The family is composed of a modular pendant lamp and a table lamp.

MagicTiles:


Lamp based on a kinetic synchronized mechanism composed of nine flat squares concurrently movable to expand or contract their layout. The system permits to adjust the light diffusion, given by the nine Oled framed into the squares. The shape of the mechanism inspired the design that perfectly fits the morphology and the modular nature of Oled. The prototype was developed  as a floor lamp, but the system can also be applied to build hanging and table lamps. It can be offered in a variety of compositions.

MAURO DEL SANTO

 

(*1978) is a Designer and educator specialising in Product Design and innovation in Material Technology. Since he set up his own practice in Rome in 2003, he has developed furniture, products, lighting, and exhibitions for some of the leading companies in the design field. Among his most prominent clients are IED, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Municipality of Rome, Italian Ministry of Defence, Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Selex, Sistema Compositi, UNHCR, Danish Refugee Councils, ENI, Hertz. His designs have received international design awards such as the nomination for the Compasso d`Oro and the Maker of Merit 2014.

 

Mauro Del Santo has produced a number of significant exhibitions for the design school IED Rome and the events PromiseDesign.

 

Since 2005, Mauro Del Santo has been teaching    Design Development, Prototyping and Material Technology at IED Rome, the University of Rome La Sapienza and the University of Nairobi.
